Active Citizenship and Advocacy
R.E.A.C.H. provides all our students in their grade eight-year, an opportunity to investigate, develop, and exercise their ideas and voice in local, regional, and international communities through the R.E.A.C.H. Legacy Project.
Initiatives all contain an element of action. Students, parents, and the greater community have the opportunity to support diverse local, regional, and international endeavours from the donation of their time to the funding of autism and dyslexia. Permanent installations such as Erin Oaks, New Oakville Hospital, or emergency relief such as the Humboldt tragedy, earthquake relief in Haiti and Italy, the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004, and the Katrina hurricane in New Orleans, are examples of a few initiatives student and community leadership has supported.
All efforts are purposeful and allow students to express their concern for aspects of the community they believe require a “hand up”. They then develop programs that have a lasting impact in the community, with the express objective to give a gift that keeps on giving.
Initiatives will:
- Target and promote the four pillars of H.O.P.E.
- Possess an opportunity for active learning for students and the community
- Provide an opportunity to learn and develop a well-modulated voice for students
- Offer the opportunity to build a platform for students in the community for self and social advocacy
- Possess the option for alumni to continue further development of a project. (Alumni also have the opportunity to gain service hours that meet the requirement of their high school diploma)
- Act in a non-partisan way when partnered with other agencies
- Answer an immediate need in the school community that members can rally around
